Dean's Message
As we begin another season, I am reminded of the fine conclusion to the last. Our visit to the Provincetown Art Association and Museum and Annual Dinner was greatly enjoyed by all who took part. Imagine leading an effort raising six million dollars as our tour guide, Chris McCarthy, Executive Director did. And consider all the detailed arrangements made by our own Darlene Hagon so that we might have such a wonderful (and affordable) dinner at Fanizzi's.
At that event the 2007 election results were announced by Karen Crosby. The Class of 2010 is Sarah Bach, Pat Crews and Josette Goff. Along with congratulations to them comes our sincere thanks to all who agreed to run and to the Nominating Committee chaired by Alexandra Turner. "Sandy" as she is known to many has made our chapter what it is today. For heading up the very successful Regional Convention we hosted in 2003 and all her other efforts over many years, we owe her profound thanks.
At the first meeting of your "new" board, the following Appointed Positions were confirmed: Education, Karen Crosby, Nominating, Fred Drifmeyer and Publicity, Noel Tipton. We have one more to fill: Hospitality. It would be most encouraging if one (or more) of you reading 'The Foghorn' might offer to take this on! Call me, please. At that time also we established a policy to allow advertising in our Membership Directory which continues to be so carefully prepared by Registrar, Pat Crews. For a fee of $30 we will include your professional card when the 2008 edition is printed. We hope this will be a way organ maintenance firms for example and others such as those who seek students can be made known to us. Cards accompanied by a check must reach Pat by November 1. In a related matter, we reaffirmed a fee of $25 for those willing to be Chapter Friends - supporters who are not employed organists. This category we hope will include businesses, churches, etc. in addition to those individuals we gratefully consider fans.
Now to the program year ahead. The Board enthusiastically adopted a report by our great Sub Dean, Joe Marchio. Please note below details of the Convocation on September 24. And, start thinking about what food you will bring to the wine and dine pot luck supper. Our special guest for that will by newly appointed Regional Councilor, E. Lary Grossman. That will also be an opportunity to introduce new members. Please help us get the Fall off to a good start with your attendance.
And, one more request. Mark your calendar for the afternoon of Sunday, October 28 - a Hymn Festival at the First Congregational Church in Chatham.

Richard Webster (b. 1952) is the Associate Director of Music at Trinity Church, Copley Square in Boston. He is also the Music Director of Chicago's Bach Week Festival. As a composer, Richard's anthems, mass settings, canticles, hymn tunes and organ music are published by Advent Press, Augsburg Fortress, Selah, Church Publishing, the Church Music Society and World Library Publications. His hymn arrangements for brass, organ, timpani and congregations are widely used in the U.S., Britain, South Africa, Australia and Canada, and are featured regularly on the CBC live Easter and Christmas broadcasts. His recent commissions include works for the Cleveland Museum of Art, Baylor University, the 2006 AGO National Convention and numerous churches. Two CDs from Advent Press -- Fanfare! and Brass* Organ*Quires -- have been hailed as setting a new standard in music for the church.
In 2003, after 30 years as Organist and Choirmaster at the Parish Church of Saint Luke in Evanston, Richard was named Organist and Choirmaster Emeritus. At St. Luke's he directed the Choir of Men and Boys, the Girls Choir, Adult Schola, and the St. Luke's Singers in a widely respected program. Under his leadership the choirs made seven tours of Great Britain, released six acclaimed recordings and were one of three American choirs selected for broadcast on BBC Radio's Choral Evensong. They were also featured in Robert Altman's film, A Wedding. The 1998 restoration of the historic 1922 Ernest M. Skinner organ in St. Luke's was overseen by Richard and is dedicated by the parish in thanksgiving for his ministry.
He has directed RSCM Training Courses for choristers in the U.S. and South Africa and is a past president of the Association of Anglican Musicians. He frequently performs with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Milwaukee and Grant Park Symphony Orchestras.
His organ teachers have included Peter Fyfe, Karel Paukert, Wolfgang Rübsam. As a Fulbright Scholar to England, he studied the English choral tradition and served as Organ Scholar at Chichester Cathedral, under John Birch.
As a diversion, Richard loves running and has completed twelve marathons, including the Boston Marathon four times.

Grace is a retired Certified Occupational Health Nurse who has studied the organ sporadically over the years and has served as a substitute and regular organist in parishes from Germany to North Carolina to Massachusetts. Currently, she is very active at St. David's Episcopal Church in South Yarmouth, singing in the choir and substituting on that organ bench. She also plays with the "oldies / sing-along" band at St. David's Community Suppers every Thursday evening.
Karen Crosby made an excellent suggestion at the July meeting of the Executive Board. She would like everyone to urge their church to become a "Chapter Friend", and she has started the ball rolling with her church. How about it, members? Please bring this subject up at your next music committee or staff meeting. The dues for a "Chapter Friend" are only $25 per year. Don't worry about any "paperwork". Just send me a check made out to "Cape Cod and the Islands Chapter - AGO" and I will take care of the rest.

We follow a traditional form of worship for the Episcopal Church even as I am now beginning to introduce some of the newer liturgical forms which have been written by the Episcopal Church's Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music.
The reason for the vacancy is the most recent organist has just retired after serving here for 10 years.

National & Regional News

2007 Region I Convention
Philip's Region One Convention Notes
Phew! What a scorcher!
As the British newspapers say when there is half an hour of sunshine in Leeds.
But for those who attended the Region I Convention in Rhode Island the past few days the weather really was scorching.
A fair number of our chapter members joined in the events for this most excellent convention.
I am sure that all who attended any of the events can speak of 'highlights' - here are some.
The opening hymn festival was based on the (very welcome) theme of Justice, Reconciliation and Peace.
From the opening piece by Richard Strauss for brass and organ (Knight's Templar March), to the final hymn improvisation by Peter Krasinski (were did he get all those sounds from?) the entire festival was an inspiration.
Monday opened with a recital by Patricia Snyder 'A Taste Of New England' - organ music by New England composers - Pinkham,Paine, Buck, Parker, Amy Beach, Gwyneth Walker, and a specially commissioned piece from Barbara Kolb.
Workshops during the day included a masterclass from Paul Jacobs.
The class was very good but I really enjoyed the look on the face of the chap sat beside me (we were in the balcony) when his water bottle went over the top and crashed down below.
We did not hear any shrieks so - presumably - no harm done.
As we arrived at the evening concert (Paul Jacobs) from the bus we saw the queue for the concert stretching around the building.
Paul's recital was a good as a recital could ever be.
Presumably only JSB himself could have been better - and then one can never be sure.
Lizst, Rachmaninoff, Menuhin, Segovia, Jacobs - you get the picture?
Tuesday morning saw a return to earth with a visit to St. George's School, Newport and a recital featuring Middelschulte, Reger and other German romantic composers.
Brink Bush performed brilliantly - an inspirational concert of great depth.
In the early afternoon Andrew Galuska played a first-class recital which included two improvisations - great stuff.
Andrew also gave authoritative performances of the de Grigny "Veni Creator Spiritus" and the Durufle Prelude, Adagio and variation on "Veni Creator Spiritus" - one of my very favorite pieces - by this time in the Convention I was walking on a cloud!
More classes followed by an evening concert celebrating the music of C. Alexander Peloquin.
Wednesday began with a recital of African-American composers given by Hope Davis.
This included two of her own compositions one being a splendid representation of a Californian earthquake.
Some good music was presented at this recital - all published by Morning Star.
More workshops and finally a concluding recital give by Dame Gillian Weir.
An all French program on the Casavant organ.
The Allegro vivace from the Widor Symphony V (first movement) - I simply have never heard it better.
The encore was the Hamburger Totentanz by Guy Bovet - the organ equivalent of Ravel's Bolero.
More concerts and events took place than I can report.
At the Regional meeting Heinrich Christensen spoke about the plans for the Boston Convention in two years.
All 'green' - no buses - just strolling from church to church - I can't wait!
Thanks to all who made the Convention possible.
